Louisiana Comp Blog’s upcoming tech conference, Spotlight on Solutions, will bring together various stakeholders in the workers’ comp industry on June 15th in New Orleans to discuss how technology is changing comp and where we’re headed in the age of endless information.
Leading up to the conference, this Q&A series will allow attendees to learn more about our presenters and what they have to offer. Below, Sharon Cartaya, of CorVel, talks about our virtual world and its role in telehealth.
More information and registration for Spotlight on Solutions is available here.
Comp Blog: What is your educational background?
Cartaya: I started a degree in speech pathology from high school but changed to nursing so I could focus more on serving diverse populations in the community. While I earned my BSN from the University of Miami, I participated in a special project for the homeless in Miami that provided free health services with volunteer hours from health care providers.
Comp Blog: What positions did you hold prior to joining CorVel’s leadership?
Cartaya: I worked on community programs under federal grants, community-based clinics, managed care, and telephonic triage. My last position was at Centene, where I managed the telehealth team virtually. We answered over a million calls a year.
Comp Blog: How long have you been with CorVel?
Cartaya: I’ve been with CorVel a little less than a year.
Comp Blog: What does your day-to-day look like in your job?
Cartaya: Most of my days are filled with working with the CorVel interdisciplinary team to improve outcomes for the injured worker and seek better opportunities for the employer. This may entail things such as looking at quality, metrics, workflows, staffing, policies, and setting up pilots to test new processes.
Comp Blog: How does technology influence your work?
Cartaya: We live and work in a virtual world, and count on technological advances to better serve our callers. Telehealth services have become a desirable alternative since we have the tech capabilities in rural locations.
Comp Blog: What are the key takeaways that you would like Spotlight on Solutions attendees to gain from your presentation?
Cartaya: Immediate intervention is key to consumer delight and benefits the employer as it provides better outcomes.
